“One might say that immensity is a philosophical category of daydream. Daydream undoubtedly feeds on all kinds of sights, but through a sort of natural inclination, it contemplates grandeur. And this contemplation produces an attitude that is so special, an inner state that is so unlike any other, that the daydream transports the dreamer outside the immediate world to a world that bears the mark of infinity” (Bachelard, 2014, p. 201).
Surrounded by veils of young, soft greens, grounded amongst the leaf litter, observing, and contemplating the sounds, smells, and movement of the forest in spring, I became aware of the complex interconnected systems of life unseen, micro, macro, atomic and subatomic. Mycelial networks threading their way underneath our feet and into the surrounding vegetal structures. Insects, fungi, and micro-organisms playing their part in the cyclical process of growth and decay. Leaf-litter overlooked and crushed underfoot, was scraped back, and lifted onto paper where became a stencil through which layers of ink were splattered. Images emerged which suggest a shift of scale. A 1.5m by 2.15m section of forest floor expands to suggest something immense.
